For Christmas 2008, several bands connected through the so-called “Roman scene” came together to record a cover of John Lennon’s famous song “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” as a charity project.

The idea comes from Daniele Autore, singer and guitarist for Vanilla Sky (Universal), who has also worked a as a producer and sound engineer of other successful cover songs including Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (one of the most well-known). The project on one hand, aims to highlight the friendship and harmony existing among many bands within Rome that hang out at the same clubs as a means of mutual support, and on the other, seeks to create an opportunity for concrete charity initiatives.

The song selected is a wish for a pleasant Christmas and New Year for everyone rich and poor, white and black, which coincides with the initial idea of this collaboration.

Four events will promote the Romans Do It Better Project: the participation of an all star band during the Telethon charity marathon (December 12), the fourth edition of the Romans Do It Better festival organized by Fast Forward Booking Agency (December 20), the Christmas Party organized by Pearls for Breakfast Agency (December 22), and an acoustic performance by Vanilla Sky (December 25). In addition, the bands have also produced a video.

All of the musicians involved with this project will volunteer during the Christmas holiday at detention centers for the poor. They will deliver special acoustic performances after helping in the kitchens and dining halls to prepare and distribute meals.

This year’s events with the Romans Do It Better Project will serve as a foundation for a greater venture, with the hope of achieving an international scope involving a recording project, and the creation of a network of musicians, producers, journalists, and professionals of the industry to host similar events in other Italian cities and throughout the rest of the world.
